I'm taking a break from the travel aspect of the blog to bring you a review of a new up and coming indie hip hop band.
Ocean Black
Self Titled
Ocean Man Music, 2011
Charlottesville, Virginia's Ocean Black combine electronic and hip hop elements in a swirly mesmerizing sound. They're tough to categorize because they sound really unique. Think old school hip hop but with synth and guitar driven undertones. The lyrics are thoughtful and are very catchy. Probably the two most memorable tracks are “The World Keeps Spinning Round” and “Homegrown.”
“The World Keeps Spinning Round” is easily the anthem of the summer with the laid back and contagious chorus. “Namaste” is catchy tune that gives us hope with the male/female duet and the message of overcoming hard times. “Out on the Road” is a mellow road trip song that's perfect for your road mix. Positive messages and a mellow vibe resonate throughout Ocean Black's music. This is what good hip hop should sound like. Grab this record and make it the soundtrack to your summer.
